Arthur Raymond Chung became the first president of Guyana in 1970 and was also the first ethnically Chinese head of state elected in a non-Asian country. Born in Windsor Forest, British Guiana, to a Chinese Guyanese family, he trained as a barrister in London before returning home to enter public service-rising through the judiciary and into national politics under Forbes Burnham's push for a republic.
