Devastating War on Paraguay

In 1864, Brazil, Argentina, and Uruguay waged the War of the Triple Alliance against Paraguay, largely in response to its territorial ambitions and interference in Uruguayan politics. The conflict nearly obliterated Paraguay, resulting in the death of 60-70% of its population. The war left Paraguay devastated, with its male population decimated-some regions reported gender ratios as high as 20 women to 1 man-and the nation took decades to recover demographically and economically.
