Polish Haitian Heritage

A group of Polish Haitians are descendants of Napoleonic soldiers who deserted their ranks to join Haitian forces upon learning that they were fighting for freedom against slavery. Today, their descendants-often referred to as "Poloné"-reside mainly in the village of Cazale, where Polish features and surnames are still common among the population.
