Bison Conservation Success

While the bald eagle is a national symbol of the United States, the American bison holds the title of national mammal. The bison population, once over 60 million, plummeted to fewer than 600 by 1889. However, due to successful conservation efforts, it has rebounded to 500,000 and continues to grow.
