In the 19th century, a poor Chinese man named Hong Xiuquan failed the civil service exam and fell ill. After rereading a Christian pamphlet he had previously ignored, he hallucinated that he was Jesus' brother. Consequently, he led a cult and rebellion, conquering much of southern China and crowning himself king. This civil war resulted in over 10 million deaths.
