Onions Made Shakespeare's Eyes Water

The phrase "Who's cutting onions in here?"-often used to disguise tears-traces back at least to Shakespeare. In All's Well That Ends Well, the character Lafeu explains his emotion in the final scene by saying, "Mine eyes smell onions."
