Swiss Guard Died Protecting Clement VII

During the Sack of Rome in 1527, over 20,000 mutinous troops of Holy Roman Emperor Charles V invaded the city. Pope Clement VII fled to safety as 142 members of the Swiss Guard heroically defended the Vatican in a last stand. None survived.
