In 1334, the College of Cardinals accidentally elected Pope Benedict XII. During the first round of voting, cardinals often cast ballots for random candidates to gauge alliances. However, this tactic backfired when every cardinal unknowingly voted for the same obscure candidate, much to his surprise.
