Emperor Charles V's Treaty Gamble

In 1525, after defeating the French and capturing King Francis I, Emperor Charles V chose diplomacy over invasion and released the king in exchange for a treaty. Contemporaries like Machiavelli mocked him as “mad” and “foolish.” Francis later broke the treaty as soon as he was freed.
