Pope's Brief Papacy Bans Smoking

Pope Urban VII’s only major act during his 13-day papacy was issuing the world’s first public smoking ban. He declared that anyone who used tobacco in or around churches—whether by chewing, smoking, or sniffing—would face excommunication.
