The Turk Tricked Explorers

One early Spanish explorer of the American Southwest encountered a Native man they called "The Turk," who spoke of a rich land to the east. He later confessed that he invented the story to lure the Spaniards away from Pueblo communities-hoping they'd perish from starvation on the plains.
