The first Polish settlers arrived in Jamestown in 1608-twelve years before the Pilgrims landed in Massachusetts. Captain John Smith brought them over for their skilled craftsmanship. When they were denied voting rights in 1619, they organized a strike-the first documented labor protest in U.S. history.
