Bone Island Became Key West

The Spanish were the first Europeans to settle the Florida Keys. When they discovered a burial mound on one of the southernmost islands, they named it Caya Hueso-Spanish for "Bone Island." The name was later Anglicized to Key West. Spain officially ceded Florida to the United States in 1821.
