Colonists Ignored Papal Orders

Catholic pressure led to early laws against the exploitation of Native Americans in the colonies, beginning as early as 1512. Eventually, the Pope entirely outlawed their enslavement and encouraged even more pro-Native legislation. However, settlers largely ignored or actively opposed these laws.
