William IX, the 11th-century Duke of Aquitaine and one of the earliest troubadours (medieval poet-musicians who composed and performed songs about chivalry and courtly love), famously displayed a portrait of his mistress on his shield. This bold and scandalous affair eventually led to his second excommunication from the Church.
