Chicago’s Meigs Field Demolition

In 2003, Chicago mayor Richard M. Daley ordered the midnight bulldozing of Meigs Field, a small downtown lakefront airport in Chicago. This unexpected action left 16 planes stranded on the ground, including several Fire Department helicopters. As a result, the FAA fined the city $33,000 for failing to provide the required 30-day notice before closing an airport.
