In 1932, the "Bonus Army"-a group of WWI veterans-marched to Washington, D.C., demanding their promised wartime bonuses. Under President Hoover's orders, U.S. troops led by General Douglas MacArthur used tear gas, bayonets, and tanks to disperse them, killing two and injuring many.
