General Hooker’s Troop Reforms

In 1863, Union General Joseph Hooker significantly boosted troop morale by improving soldiers' diets and hygiene. He issued soft bread four times a week, fresh onions or potatoes twice a week, and dried vegetables once a week. He also required soldiers to bathe twice a week and air out their bedding.
