In 1813, Sequoyah, an illiterate Cherokee warrior, observed the "talking leaves" (writing) of white men and believed it provided a military advantage. In 1821, driven by his determination to establish a written system for his own people, he meticulously crafted a Cherokee syllabary. Within just nine years, Cherokee literacy exceeded 90%.
