Gogol’s Gruesome Starvation Death

Gogol’s Gruesome Starvation Death

Russian writer Nikolai Gogol slowly starved himself to death after refusing all food toward the end of his life. His doctors attempted several brutal treatments, including force-feeding him bouillon, pouring a bucket of hot water on his head, applying half a dozen leeches to his nose, and administering a soap suppository-none of which worked. He ultimately died at the age of forty-two.
