During the 1980s, Bayer Pharmaceutical knowingly distributed HIV-contaminated blood transfusions to hemophiliacs in countries like France, Spain, and Japan. In 1997, Bayer and three other manufacturers agreed to a $660 million settlement for over 6,000 hemophiliacs infected in the United States, although no Bayer executive faced criminal charges.
