The deadliest hurricane in U.S. history struck Galveston, Texas, in 1900, killing between 6,000 and 12,000 people. The storm’s debris and bodies spread so far that trains six miles (9.7 km) from the city had to stop. Meanwhile, floodwaters destroyed all bridges connecting Galveston to the mainland.
