Jefferson Davis attempted to patent a steam-operated propeller invented by his slave, Ben Montgomery, but authorities denied him the patent because he was not recognized as the true inventor. As President of the Confederacy, Davis then had signed a law permitting the owner to apply for a patent on a slave's invention.
