In 2013, the first known instance of a storm chaser or meteorologist being killed by a tornado occurred near El Reno, Oklahoma. In this tragic event, Tim Samaras, his son Paul, and Carl Young lost their lives when the widest tornado ever recorded struck. Notably, the tornado expanded from 1 mile to 2.6 miles wide in about 30 seconds as it closed in on them.
