The Massacre of Kalavryta (1943)

In December 1943, German soldiers massacred the entire village of Kalavryta, Greece, in retaliation for the deaths of 78 prisoners of war captured by Greek guerrillas. Only 13 men survived, and one Austrian soldier saved many of the women from being burned alive. A total of 693 people died.
