Alcatraz Escapee Reached Shore in 1962

John Paul Scott escaped Alcatraz on December 16, 1962, and swam to Fort Point beneath the Golden Gate Bridge, where authorities found him hypothermic and exhausted. This is the only verified case of an inmate escaping and reaching shore by swimming. He was subsequently returned to Alcatraz.
