SS Atlantic: Gender Deception

One of the victims of the SS Atlantic wreck was discovered to be a woman disguised as a man. Revered among her shipmates, one recalled, "I didn't know Bill was a woman. He took his grog as regularly as any of us, and he was always begging for or stealing tobacco. He was a good fellow, and I'm sorry he was a woman."
