Although submarines constituted only about 2% of the US Navy in World War II, the group destroyed over 30% of the Japanese Navy, including 8 aircraft carriers and 11 cruisers. It also crippled over 60% of the Japanese merchant fleet, greatly impairing Japan's ability to supply its military and war effort.
