The chemotherapy drug paclitaxel (Taxol) was initially derived from the bark of the Pacific yew tree. In 1987, its anti-cancer effects were observed, but bark harvesting endangered the trees. Scientists successfully synthesized the drug, leading to its approval in 1992 as an effective treatment for numerous cancers.
