The earliest known reference to "spaghetti in tomato sauce" dates back to 1844. Tomatoes, originally from Peru, were initially deemed too "exotic" for Italian palates and were referred to as "Pomidoro," meaning "golden apple," due to the yellow-colored variety introduced to Italians in the 1500s.
