Creme Brulee has been around for a very long time—at least 700 years, to be exact, since it was first mentioned in a cookbook written in the 14th century. The recipe called for custard cream to be poured over sugar and then torched with a hot iron rod. Crema Catalan was the name of this dish, and it was substantially identical to the contemporary Creme Brulee.
