Dolmabahçe Palace in Istanbul was built in 1856 at the cost equivalent to 35 tons of gold or $1.5 billion in today's money. This was a quarter of the Ottoman Empire’s yearly tax revenue and was a huge expense, which led to the Ottoman Empire defaulting on its public debt in 1875.
