Fourth Crusade

The Crusaders planned to finance the Fourth Crusade by stopping first in Constantinople, to assist in a coup. When they were not fairly compensated by the new Byzantine Emperor, they seized control of the city and surrounding territory, establishing the short-lived Latin Empire (1204-1261).
