Bebop legend Dizzy Gillespie ran for president in 1964. Though it started as a joke, he kept it up in part because proceeds from his campaign merchandise went to Congress of Racial Equality (CORE), the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
