The 1815 Mount Tambora eruption killed 100,000 people and caused a volcanic winter and a massive famine around the world. To this day it is the most powerful recorded eruption ever. It is rated VEI 7 on the Volcano Explosivity Index. It is widely known as “The Year without a summer.”
