Bartolomé de las Casas

Bartolomé de las Casas was a 16th-century Spanish priest who, after witnessing the atrocities of the Spanish against the indigenous peoples, came to oppose their abuses. He would go on to spend 50 years actively fighting slavery and is considered one of the first advocates for human rights.
