Joseph Grew, who was the US ambassador to Japan during the lead-up to World War 2, heard rumors in in January 1941 in Tokyo that the Japanese were preparing a surprise attack on Pearl Harbor in case of a break with the US. When Grew alerted Washington, his warnings were ignored.
