In 1991, two artists named Christo and Jeanne Claude paid $26 million to install thousands of umbrellas along the California highway. One of the umbrellas was toppled by high winds, killing one woman and injuring several others. The exhibit was ordered closed and another person died during the removal of the umbrellas.
